Botontkalking

De overgang is een belangrijke oorzaak van botontkalking (osteoporose) bij vrouwen. Doordat het lichaam minder vrouwelijk hormoon (oestrogeen) maakt, neemt de botdichtheid af en wordt het bot minder stevig. Het risico op osteoporose wordt daarmee groter. Ook sommige behandelingen kunnen het risico op botontkalking vergroten. Bijvoorbeeld een hormonale behandeling bij borstkanker of prostaatkanker. Mannen kunnen daardoor ook te maken krijgen met botontkalking. Ook een ongezond voedingspatroon en minder beweging kunnen meewerken aan het ontstaan van osteoporose.
